Work Habits That Will Ruin Your Career

Have you ever thought why your attempts to climb the career ladder are not successful? Or why the conversation with management regarding increasing wages did not give a positive result? Maybe the reason is in your behavior and habits which in reality prevent professional and career growth. What personal qualities are to be paid attention to achieve the goal and get rid of career failures?

Fear of making mistakes
Striving for the faultless performance of responsibilities is one of the most common habits of employees which not only spoil the career, but also can significantly reduce the professional self-esteem. Fear of making mistakes considerably affects the quality of work and do not give the opportunity to express the worker’s possibilities and realize the important ideas and ideas. Nevertheless, every mistake is the gained experience which leads you to the gradual improvement of skills and achievement of the desired result. Therefore it is better to relax and just perform the responsibilities on a qualitative level.

Idle talk
Constant conversations in the workplace do not promote the labor activity and active career development. Moreover, not all colleagues will be interested to hear about some of the events and the details of your personal life. Also not all workers maintain gossips and intrigues. Think about your actions and you may notice that the idle chatter gradually renders working and performing of job duties on a secondary plan.

Permanent lack of organization
Lack of organization greatly reduces productivity and efficiency of work. What can be worse than the spoiled reputation because of the forgotten business meeting or loss of an important document? That is why use notepads and address books to write the list of affairs and other important information. In addition, the modern computer technology can greatly save time and simplify the organization of the working day. It would be nice to bring order in the workplace and get rid of unnecessary documentation - in this case, all the papers and reports will always be ordered and in the right place.

Negative reaction to the constructive criticism
Every employee, even a professional and experienced specialist, is not insured from mistakes or not quite accurate performance of the assignments. Therefore, the task of any head is to notice in time and give advice on the quality of work and methods of correcting the inaccuracies. However, not all employees can take such assistance - the criticism prompts them to the permanent use of defensive behavior and aggressive position. In any case, try to stay calm and listen to advice and suggestions adequately - that will help avoid conflict and the chief certainly appreciate your desire to change for the better side.

Criticism of the mistakes of others
Inappropriate comments about mistakes can greatly damage relations with colleagues. First, it is a sign of unprofessionalism that is rather inappropriate for building a career. Secondly, criticism and wishes concerning the performance of work of other workers is a direct obligation of the head, so negative comments would adversely affect your professional reputation. The best variant in this situation is to adhere to the neutral position and express the opinion in case when you are really asked for the professional advice.

Hasty decisions
Sometimes different work situations (conflict with management or colleagues, stressful work environment, a new proposal for cooperation) force the careless actions which then can be regretted. Nevertheless, the habit to succumb to emotions and make hasty and sudden actions may negatively affect the career development. It is a good idea to consider and weigh all the benefits and risks of own decisions initially, from which many things are depended - the level of wages, the prospect of a good position, professional self-esteem.

Frequent delays
Many employees believe small but regular late for work is unserious and not so important issue. However, remember that management will sure to pay attention to the systematic violations of internal regulations of the company. It is unlikely that the situation will improve the relationship with the head and contribute to the career growth.

Lack of punctuality is seen by many as a sign of insecurity and of disrespect to the colleagues, for whom your delay may cause the suspension of the workflow. If you want to resolve this issue, determine the cause firstly - perhaps the reason is in the banal lack of sleep or lack of organization. Try to prepare since evening and do not leave the important things for the morning (for example, gathering of documents or the choice of clothing).

The desire not to stand out among the staff
If you are too silent, afraid to offer original ideas and solutions or shy to start a conversation with the management on improving labor conditions, you cannot hope to obtain more promising and paid work. Indecisive workers remain unnoticed and are not considered as promising candidates, so long-awaited proposals to raise and get a new post won’t be forthcoming.

Ignoring the business meetings
Meetings and conferences are an important part of the professional activity of any company where important problems are solved and significant issues are discussed. Ignoring such events suggests disregard for the business relationships and disinterest to the work of the organization. Colleagues and leadership will be frustrating to see your absence, especially if you have to take an active part in the discussion. Therefore show respect for staff and do not neglect business etiquette - do not be late and do not forget to switch off the mobile phone.

Negative attitude
The vision the situation only in the negative colors greatly complicates successful career movement, because the employee sees the flaws in almost any situation - regarding the leadership and colleagues, in the rules and regulations of the company, in working conditions etc. It is worth thinking - maybe the situation is not so bad, and most of the problems are just exaggerated? Try to find the positive aspects of the work, even if they focus on the details - it will help to distract and get in the right mood.

Failure to use the new methods and technologies
Continuous improvement of the skills is not just attending seminars and advanced training courses, but also mastering new computer technologies. This quality is really important, because many employers pay attention to the level of PC skills and to the willingness to use new techniques in the process of work. In addition, it improves the value of your competitiveness among other colleagues, and in the case of job search it helps to make resume more successful and attractive.

10 Tips To Navigating The Politics Of Office Email

1. Never reply an email when angry; take your time for your adrenaline to drop before replying.

2. Read your composed email at least three times before clicking ‘send’.

3. Decide whether to use ‘reply’ or ‘reply all’ by asking yourself, what is the relevance of this email to each of these persons.

4. If you must reply all, ensure you know all the recipients; if you don’t know, you can ask a colleague, ‘please who is Robert Alabi?’

5. Knowing the people in the email will guide the tone of your email. Imagine if a GM is in the email trail, compared to when all the recipients are your peers. The tone may be different.

6. No problem in asking a colleague to help you go through your composed email message before sending, especially if the information is not critical and the recipient(s) is(are) top level people.

7. If an email trail within the company must be sent out to an external party (e.g your banker or consultant) by you, make sure you leave only the parts that are harmless to be sent out and relevant to the external recipient in making decision. Read through the trail and make sure you delete any confidential internal communication in the mail trail.

8. There is nothing wrong in running a message by your boss before putting into email. If you and your boss are in the copy of an email and you need to reply, you may first walk to your boss and tell him what you want to send out, else you run the risk of sending out information that runs contrary to your boss’ understanding. And knowing when this is necessary and when it is not, is another thing you must know.

9. You get result fast when you copy a colleague or external recipient’s boss, but never abuse this. Don’t copy bosses just anyhow, you may make enemy for yourself.

10. Never use direct strong words in your email. If you can’t control your strong emotion at that time, use phone call. . There are some words you can use verbally and escape it, but when they are written down, they are unimpeachable exhibits that will easily land you into trouble.

NIGERIA – WHERE IS THE LOVE

An Essay on the state of the Nation

”Arise O compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey. To serve our fatherland, with love and strength and faith. The labor of our heroes past shall never be in vain, to serve with heart and might one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.”

The above words referred to as the national anthem were put to music by the Nigerian Police Band under the directorship of the late Benedict Elide Odiase in 1978.

These words amongst other things impress upon our minds and hearts that we are one and are supposed to dwell in love, peace, and unity. Sadly this has not been the case in recent times.

Our beloved country Nigeria has been made seemingly ‘ungovernable’ by the Boko-Haram insurgents in the last four years. They have constantly carried out their nefarious activities over the years with reckless abandon forcing many to flee their homes in the northern part of Nigeria.

So many persons have lost their lives – Christians and Muslims alike – which makes me wonder; where is the love, where is the peace, and the unity the very endearing attributes upon which our founding fathers built this nation? If the Boko-Haram insurgents had any love whatsoever for their Nigerian brothers and sisters, would they continuously unleash such mayhem thereby making the Northern part of Nigeria anarchic?

While some may argue that these insurgents are not of Nigerian origin, it suffices to conclude that since they have taken up residence in Nigeria, they should live as one with us. Lets take the American experience for example. “E Pluribus Unum” is the United States motto appearing on the nation’s coin and paper money and many of its monuments. It means ‘from many one’. This phrase was acquired after the USA received an untold number of immigrants from many lands. These immigrants had to find ways to reconcile their varied backgrounds and fit together under the constitution and a set of laws of the United States. That process of creating one society out of many different backgrounds is one of the biggest stories of the American experience, wherein lies their strength.

Therefore whether these insurgents are Nigerians or not, they should contribute to building the country and not tear it down by making it ungovernable.

It is truly sad and tiring to turn on the TV and radio each morning to hear of fresh attacks from this sect. Series of blasts were reported in Kano state, scores of people praying at a mosque in Borno were killed, school children were killed, schools were burnt down, the list is endless. Although the government stepped up its fight against the Islamist militants when the military began an air and ground offensive against Boko-Haram on May 16, 2013, yet we still record killings by the group even after the declaration of a state of emergency in select northern states.

Is there an end in sight? One must wonder. But then, if only we could sit back and pay very close attention to the lyrics of the national anthem; if only the Boko-Haram sect could listen to the lyrics of the national anthem, allow these sink into minds and hearts thus realizing that we are indeed one nation, a nation wherein our strength lies in our diversity, maybe just maybe they would put a complete stop to their activities and have a complete turn-around for good.

Our country Nigeria is indeed a blessed nation and whether we all know it or not, whether we like it or not, whether the Boko-Haram sect believes it or not, we are our sister and our brother’s keeper. Therefore if each one could reach one and each one could teach one, what a much more beautiful, peaceful and united nation bound in love Nigeria would be!

4 ways to cope with a nagging wife

1. Ignore the nagging
nagging wifeDifficult as it may sound, it is advisable to ignore her when she begins to nag. She may either get bored or tired.

2. Keep her busy
Always try and keep the nagging at bay by taking her out for dinner or just doing something together. So try and second guess and nip it in the bud before the nag rot sets in.

3. Listen to her
Chances are that you have heard the following line more than once— ‘You never listen to me!’ To get her off your back, at least pretend you are listening. Be willing to sit down and have a conversation with her at least once a day.

4. Shower her with gifts
If the nagging seems like it is never ending, deal with the problem by buying her a gift.

might i add, "give her a dirty slap that will send her to sleep".....lol
abeg ooo i dont in anyway condone domestic violence ...

Being able to speak well is important than being able to write well?

An Essay from this page

In my opinion being able to speak well is surely more important than being to write well. I will clarify my thoughts in the following manner.

Firstly, I think speech is a faster and more appealing kind of communication.
You can reach and touch the mind and hearts of people so fast. When people listen carefully they surely try to act upon what you want to convey.
Nonetheless, listeners will at-least give a thought.

Secondly, when you talk or express something you are bound to be true. Since there are people listening right in front of you, I think it becomes quite obligatory to speak what we feel. That makes you sound confident and truthful. Also speaking has an added advantage of interacting and discussing with your audience or group. It definitely helps to state your opinions more successfully.

Thirdly, speaking is one of the best way of expressing effectively. There are so many people who are busy and don't get time to read books or newspapers. What do they do? Tune on radios or television and get the news in the fastest possible way. Also, a particular strata of people are never into reading. Such kind of people can be educated and influenced by thoughts only by talking to them. They might not understand written information and instead misconstrue the writer. This happens many times. So, in such a case speaking surely overcomes all barriers.

History has showed us that good orators have always been remembered. They have had immense power in their voice and thoughts. They were able to drive people's mind.
But they may not be surely, good writers. What's more important is they spoke so effectively that people were mesmerized, enthralled and driven by their thoughts and theories. There are some people who are so good at speaking that even if asked they are given a topic on the spot they can think and start talking.
But when told to write down they may fumble and take hours to do so.
All in all, I think an individual can express his thoughts more effectively and correctly by talking rather than writing. Hence its important to be able to speak well rather than to write well.

The Eight Rules of Success to Think About Every Morning

I have said in the past that there is no magic formula when it comes to being successful in business but there are certain guiding principles that I have followed throughout the course of my career. Not everyone gets what they want in life but if you work hard and keep trying then some measure of success is bound to come your way. Here are a few of the personal rules I have stuck with throughout my career in business and still follow to this day.

1. Application
No matter what people say true success does not come easily. Like everything in life, if you really want something you are going to have to work for it and put in the time and effort. There is nothing wrong with a little bit of hard work and everyone who has gone into business for themselves will tell you it is one of the toughest things they have ever done in life.

2. Believe in yourself
There is no point in going into business for yourself if you do not have any confidence or self-belief. When you set up your own company the only person you have to answer to is yourself - which means confidence is vital. If you do not believe in yourself and your product or service, then how can you get others to put their faith in you?

3. Be creative
If you want to be truly successful then you have to be prepared to stand out from the crowd. Although I have always believed that an idea doesn't have to be brand new, the best businesses will still have a strong USP that sets them apart from competitors. Creativity is one of the most valuable qualities any person in the business world can have.

4. Be there first
It is a competitive world out there those who are not out of the traps quickly are the ones who are going to get left behind. I have always believed in striking first. Once you have established what the best course of action is, there is no point in being cautious because it will give your competitors the chance to get in there before you and win that vital piece of work or contract.

5. Build a brand
When I set up my first firm, the first thing I did was to go out and rent an office in the best part of London, as an address in Mayfair is great to put on a business card. The actual room itself was tiny and windowless, but nobody knew this as I arranged for meetings to take place away from the office. When it comes to doing business, building a brand and a good reputation is vital. Once you have done this, you will find things a lot easier, as most of us prefer to deal with people or companies that are recognised and trusted.

6. Seek advice
It is impossible to be an expert in every field and there is nothing wrong with seeking advice when you are struggling. When you are starting out in business it can be great to speak to someone who has years of experience behind them. If you ask for help you will usually find that people are more than happy to give their time and their expertise.

7. Get organised
Running a successful business can be very stressful and demanding and one of the most important resources you will have is your time. If you want to get the most out of your working day then you need to be properly organised and you also need to make sure you are not wasting precious time on tasks that can always be delegated to someone else.

8. Don’t run before you can walk
When you first start in business there is a tendency to grab every piece of work which comes your way, which can be a potentially fatal mistake. First of all you need to make sure that when you negotiate a contract there is a decent margin. Although you want to make your mark, there is no point in taking on work that does not yield a worthwhile profit. More importantly don’t take on more work than you can manage. It is one of the most common mistakes in business and can prove to be very costly.

Confessions of a heartbroken man! Please Advice

guys i saw this post on one of the social media forums and i decided to share this
what advice can u give to this fella?

enjoy below

Guys, i am a 28 yr old guy dating a 23yr old lady. I am in lagos and she is in Owerri. We have been together 4 3yrd nao. I completed my service in 2011 and ever since av been lookin 4 a job. I have promised marriage to her and but d thing here is am still looking 4 a job almost a year and half after service. I travel to owerri once every 2 months to check up on her and most tyms wen am der i either miss an interview or a test. She has managed wit me all thru these years. But just last month she said funny things, she started asking me wat i wld do if she was pregnant, or was dating sum1 else. I asked her if she was and she just said she wanted to know. I told her i was sure that wldnt happen because we wernt avin any problems in our r/ship so y wld she want out. Not until a few weeks back that she called me in d morning and asked me how my job search was going and if i had gotten a job. I am sure my answers were not encoraging enuf then she dropped the bomb. Said she was dating a guy in owerri, and dat shes in love with him, by d way d guy in question knows mw as her fiance. Even when i am in owerri, she still hangs with d guy till 9, 10pm at nite and i wld call and beg her to come home just 4 me to see her. I mean i left lagos to spend time with u in owerri yet ur busy with anoda guy? Wen i say dat all she says is am givin her a heartache and i was not making her happy. She accused me of alot of tinz which r true anyway, she said i abandon her because of a football match, but then i ALWAYA invite her to join me in seeing those matches but she refuses, she said she hates sport but she joins this guy to a sports club where they play snooker together. She just refuses to go on a fun outing with me but enjoys it wit dis oda guy. Wen i complained she said he is just a good friend, i mean i cld b with her in an eatery and dis guy wld call 4 close to 15minutes and she wldnt say sorry. I dont av a job yet, but i will get a job soon by His Grace. I have denied myself certain pleasures of life just to support her needs financially, i have missed potential jobs in lagos because i had to checkup on her, i made her a priority (big mistake) and now shes taking me for a ride. She even tells her new guy all d problems we have. When she promised with her own MOUTH that no 3rd party will be brot into our problems. I call her on d fone, its busy for close to an hour, wen she finally picks she tells me shes tired and dat she wants to sleep. I dont sleep, i dont eat, i cant even focus....i am so demoralised and destabilised....she is now strongly romantically involved with this guy and i mean strongly but she says she hasnt crossed the line yet. But i mean, kissing a guy everyday, isnt that cheating as well? And not just kissing, am sure there wld be loads of body smooching and all that. I asked her, why dint u just give me dat little honour i dont deserve by breaking off with me first b4 engaging this guy...she ignores me. Guys I am so tortured...i cld go and on and on. I have never had any oda girl aside her. I have beeen sooooo committed to his girl that even when shes dead broke i wld send her my last change only 4 her to use d money meant 4 her to buy perfimes for her new guy. I registered a biznes that she runs 4 me in owerri, we deal with nursery/primary schools. Between september and december we made 130k. I only asked her to send me 5k because i felt she needed the money more. Now she says i am uncaring, am not hardworking enuf dats y i dont have a job yet and other evryday problems couples regularly have. Those are my crimes. But i have never let our problems evceed 24hours b4 resolving dem even if i d offended have to say sorry i will. She says she has lost memory of our 3 years togeda. She doesnt remember anything worthy of note, that she loves the guy and wants to leave me. I have begged and begged but the truth is dis girl is toying seriosly with my emotions. I had to go meet her parents and told them wat was happening, they were shocked and said they wld wait 4 her to return and find out from her. But she had told her elder broda dat she wants out and dat it was her decision to make, no one shd force her to make a decision cos she wld live with it 4 d rest of her life. "people do change", she says. I am perplexed because i totally dont get it. I love this girl so much, shd i let her go or shd i keep fyting to win her back?
